YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL - SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED UNTIL 2022!

Submissions are now open for the Young Playwrights Festival, which celebrates its 29th Anniversary in Summer 2021!

Every June, The Blank Theatre produces the 12 best plays by playwrights ages 9 to 19, chosen from a nationwide competition. In the past 28 years, we’ve produced 345 plays by these young  writers. Winning playwrights are provided careful mentoring and  direction from industry professionals to help prepare their work for  public performance and hone their skills, talent and confidence.

Nowhere else in the nation can young playwrights receive the prize of  seeing their vision come to life on stage in a professional production  featuring known actors from film, television and theatre. The plays are  crafted by seasoned professional directors and each is given several  public performances in a month-long Festival.

Submissions are accepted annually from January to March  15 and the 12 winning plays will be produced by The Blank each Summer.

UCROSS + THE BLANK THEATRE — FUTURE OF PLAYWRITING PRIZE - APPLICATION WINDOW IS NOW CLOSED until FALL 2021

This award represents a unique collaboration between the prestigious Ucross Foundation in Wyoming, where artists from all disciplines have been supported by residencies since 1983, and The Blank Theatre in Hollywood, which has been developing new plays and new artists since 1990.  The Future of Playwriting Prize will be given annually to an early-career playwright who personifies the future of theatre — someone whose voice will shape theatre for decades to come, and who  will bring new thoughts and views to the American theatrical  conversation.

The winner will be awarded a $5,000 cash prize and an all-expenses-paid, two-week residency at Ucross’s ranch at the foothills of the Bighorn  Mountains. The residency includes transportation, accommodations, meals,  and the opportunity to commune with other  visiting artists. The winner will also receive a professionally  produced staged reading in The Blank Theatre’s Living Room Series new  play development program.  Two additional finalists will each be awarded a $500 cash prize.

LIVING ROOM SERIES - SUBMISSIONS ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED UNTIL SUMMER 2021

In summer 2021 will accept submissions for the 31st season of our Living Room Series, a New Play Development program which embodies The Blank’s commitment to developing new work by both established and emerging writers. The Living Room Series takes place on Monday evenings between Labor Day and Memorial Day. We are currently producing digitally until further notice.

The Living Room Series offers a week-long process for the playwright, director and actors to explore the play by putting it up on its feet in a limited rehearsal period and then presenting it to an audience. The performances are minimally staged, with actors carrying scripts, and are a wonderful opportunity for the playwright to get a sense of the play’s full potential. Submissions by women, playwrights of color, and other under-represented  voices are strongly encouraged. The Blank is firmly committed to  supporting gender parity and diversity.

Welcome to the SUMMER 2021 class of The Blank Theatre's Young Playwrights Academy!   We are delighted to offer this exciting extension of our  premiere national Young Playwrights Festival program to promote and  nurture new artistic voices.
